By 'balanced', we mean that you strictly control your consumption of saturated fats and refined sugar, and be careful about how much protein you eat. Kind of makes the Atkins Diet look a little shaky, doesn't it? The Atkins Diet, and other 'crash' diets are a knee-jerk reaction to a disturbing Western diet phenomenon - in short, our diet is getting worse, and we are ALL getting fatter!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;In most western countries (particularly the USA and Europe) most citizens consume too much saturated fat (generally, the rise of 'McBurgers' and other 'fast' foods is thought to be responsible for this). Likewise, we all eat too much refined sugar, which is a major component of most 'soft' drinks (or sodas) and is also found in horrendous quantities in refined white flour. The use of white flour in our bread has also contributed to a related problem - we tend to get too little fiber in our diets nowadays! Is fast food the culprit? Given that over half of every dollar spent on food in the USA is spent in fast food outlets nowadays, the answer is probably 'yes'.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Twenty years ago, an obese person would be the center of some attention - a medical problem might be suspected. Nowadays, almost 1 in 3 Americans is obese, as are 1 in 5 Brits. The problem has gone from being small, to being (literally!) large. And this has happened in a single generation. So how can we get back to diet basics?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Firstly, Balance that diet! Make sure you eat foods from ALL the major food groups.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Secondly, Keep the saturated fat and refined sugar intake LOW. Think lean chicken, some rice and a salad.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Begin eating breakfast - Have an egg white omelet with a small serving of oatmeal and some vegetables. Which is the right diet?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;People who want to lose weight are a very vulnerable group because they're very frustrated. Weight loss is hard, and everybody is looking for a silver bullet. They need to understand that the "silver bullet" does not exist.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;But how can you discern which weight loss claims are true or false? Here's some advice from the Federal Trade Commission:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Does the diet promote rapid weight loss?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;That's a clear signal it's unrealistic. When you start a diet, water weight is the first to go. If you lose much more than two pounds a week, you are drawing from both fat and muscle mass. That is not good, because muscle is a big factor that controls your metabolism. If you lose muscle mass, your metabolism will slow down. That is how the "roller coaster diet cycle" begins, and that is one reason why some diets just don't work.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The FDA recommends losing weight slowly and gradually, so you are losing one to two pounds per week. You need to tap into stored fat more efficiently, instead of burning water and muscle.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Does the weight loss program involve eating just one food, or eliminating whole food groups?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;If so then you are setting yourself up to fail. No one can stick to a diet that is constrictive. Most people who are overweight got that way from overeating. Constricting someone who has overeaten for years will rarely work.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Now, most people can do something short term, but there will be a time when the mind can't do it anymore and your body's cravings will overtake your will-power. Research shows that individuals who exercise on a regular basis have much greater success at losing weight and keeping it off. Exercise is critical to weight loss success.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;You need an hour of aerobic exercise, at least five times per week, if you seriously want to lose weight. Also, you need strength training two times a week to build muscle. Lifting weights or working with rubber tubes helps maintain and can also increase the level of lean body mass, which helps your metabolism burn calories.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Two-thirds of the calories a person burns over the course of a day are from resting metabolism. If you are on a restricted diet by decreasing calories and nutrients, and you are not doing resistance training to build muscle, it is not uncommon to see resting metabolism decrease, which results in NO WEIGHT LOSS.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Is there sound research behind the weight-loss program?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Not all studies are created equal, and there are plenty sponsored by companies to get the answers they want. If you rely on supplements or too-strict diets you're wasting your time, Zelman explains.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Likewise, don't put much weight in the negative-calorie food diet. The theory there is that when you eat lettuce, celery, and other near-zero calorie foods, your body burns more calories simply digesting them. Give me a break, says Zelman. Exercise goes hand in hand with your goals of weight loss, if you've got 10 pounds to lose, or losing those last 10 pounds (or first 10 for that matter). Which is the right diet?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;People who want to lose weight are a very vulnerable group because they're very frustrated. Weight loss is hard, and everybody is looking for a silver bullet. They need to understand that the "silver bullet" does not exist.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;But how can you discern which weight loss claims are true or false? Here's some advice from the Federal Trade Commission:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Does the diet promote rapid weight loss?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;That's a clear signal it's unrealistic. When you start a diet, water weight is the first to go. If you lose much more than two pounds a week, you are drawing from both fat and muscle mass. That is not good, because muscle is a big factor that controls your metabolism. If you lose muscle mass, your metabolism will slow down. That is how the "roller coaster diet cycle" begins, and that is one reason why some diets just don't work.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The FDA recommends losing weight slowly and gradually, so you are losing one to two pounds per week. You need to tap into stored fat more efficiently, instead of burning water and muscle.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Does the weight loss program involve eating just one food, or eliminating whole food groups?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;If so then you are setting yourself up to fail. No one can stick to a diet that is constrictive. Most people who are overweight got that way from overeating. Constricting someone who has overeaten for years will rarely work.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Now, most people can do something short term, but there will be a time when the mind can't do it anymore and your body's cravings will overtake your will-power. People who get slim and stay that way have changed their eating habits and attitudes toward food.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Does it involve exercise?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;If it doesn't, you will gain the weight back. Research shows that individuals who exercise on a regular basis have much greater success at losing weight and keeping it off. Exercise is critical to weight loss success.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;You need an hour of aerobic exercise, at least five times per week, if you seriously want to lose weight. Also, you need strength training two times a week to build muscle. Lifting weights or working with rubber tubes helps maintain and can also increase the level of lean body mass, which helps your metabolism burn calories.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Two-thirds of the calories a person burns over the course of a day are from resting metabolism. If you are on a restricted diet by decreasing calories and nutrients, and you are not doing resistance training to build muscle, it is not uncommon to see resting metabolism decrease, which results in NO WEIGHT LOSS.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Is there sound research behind the weight-loss program?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Not all studies are created equal, and there are plenty sponsored by companies to get the answers they want. If you rely on supplements or too-strict diets you're wasting your time, Zelman explains.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Likewise, don't put much weight in the negative-calorie food diet. The theory there is that when you eat lettuce, celery, and other near-zero calorie foods, your body burns more calories simply digesting them. Give me a break, says Zelman. The founder of this diet, Ph.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;D Barry Sears states, "The American public is overweight due to a high intake of carbohydrates, and that this style of eating causes an overproduction of insulin. The solution is to eat a lower carb, higher protein, and moderate fat diet to balance these hormones within the preferred zone." So how does the Zone diet compare with other diets? The Zone diet is quick to point out that this diet works primarily because of its low calories, not their magic ratio of macronutrients. This diet does not prohibit any foods, but restricts foods that are high in fat and carbs such as starches, grains, and pastas. Other diets either emphasize a low carb or low fat option, the Zone diet simply uses both nutrients, just in a smaller percentage. This diet is actually not bad compared to some of the lower carb diets available. The Zone diet does have its weak areas considering some of the recipes are full of nutritional misinformation. Another problem Zone has is that it suggests impractical food combinations such as beer and cottage cheese in one meal. Get it right first time by creating a Pre-Diet diet to get used to healthy eating and diet ideas then, when the day comes to start, you will sail smoothly into your diet and never look back.&lt;br /&gt;Dieting can be a considerable shock to the system, especially if this is a first time, and that is why many people never get past the first week. To help prepare you and your body here are five quick and easy tips to get you ready to take on a diet.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Try them for a month and at the end of the month get ready to start your diet. The tips will suit most diets but are not suitable for a low carb 'Atkins' or 'South Beach' type diet.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;BreakfastThis is the most important tip, eat something for breakfast and it is better if the breakfast is a good one. Most diets insist on a proper breakfast and so it is a habit you will need to get into.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;If you already have a breakfast then check the diet, make any changes and just carry on. If you have not chosen your diet yet, just have a bowl of cereal and a glass of juice or, if you want something more substantial, try grilled bacon and reduced-sugar baked beans on wholemeal toast.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;If you read that and thought: "No, I've tried breakfast and it's just not for me," make a slight concession and eat a banana first thing and maybe have a cup of tea. Bananas are easy to eat, highly nutritious and will usually make you hungry soon after eating. The most important thing is that it is a start and you will soon find that you are ready for food in the morning.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Five-a-dayYou know the recommendation, we should all eat five portions of fruit and vegetables a day but five portions is a minimum. If you don't eat this much already (or if you don't know how much you eat) this can sound a lot but try and get up to speed with this as soon as you can.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;When you are there, or if you already eat this much, try to increase this to seven or more portions.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;To help you, you can take advantage of the tremendous snackability of most fruit. They are tasty, fun and quick to prepare, so keep some fruit ready to eat in the fridge so that they are the first thing you see as you open the door.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;As well as this, have a bowl of dried fruit not too far away, as I do, for a tasty snack and, for top health, add a few nuts to the fruit.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Most diets (but not Atkins style low-carb diets) recommend large amounts of fruit and vegetables and it is sometimes hard to suddenly subject your body to this so increasing vegetables like this will help prepare your body for most diets.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The whole of the grainYou have heard it all before: throw out the white and only eat brown! So eat plenty of wholemeal rice, wholemeal pasta, wholemeal bread and brown potatoes.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Brown potatoes? Yes, that is my name for potatoes cooked with their skin because a lot of nutrient is trapped just below the skin and peeling tends to remove it.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Don't worry, by the way, if you have heard that wholegrains are fattening. What is fattening is eating too many calories, wholemeal food in a diet is highly nutritious and an important staple.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;If you are not sure how much to serve, try covering a third of the plate with pasta or rice or potatoes and leaving a third (plus a little) for vegetables and whatever is left for chicken or fish.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Don't be a sweetieYes, it is hard to cut down on sweet things but we all know that they are loaded to the hilt with calories so you will have to make an effort. All diets (Atkins's diets included) will not let you eat candies and chocolate and a whole host of other things so now is the time to get your body used to not eating sugar.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;In fact, reducing sugar intake is a good thing to do whether you are on a diet or not but if you are one of those people who simply cannot resist something sweet and if you know that this is your downfall then you will have to be drastic.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Giving up sugar is easy, simply choose a day next week and on that day stop eating anything that contains sugar and make it a decision for life. I know it sounds hard but if you are serious you can do it and your body will thank you for it for the rest of your life.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Change the main courseOK, this is the main recommendation, change your main course for something that is healthy. Of course, this is easy to say but I know it is a lot harder to do so make the change a gradual process.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;To drive the point home, stop a minute and think, or jot on a piece of paper, what you normally eat in a week or what you ate last week.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Your goal is to change your diet so that you reduce the processed meals to a minimum and put in their place either fish or chicken or a vegetable option.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Changing what you consider to be the main part of the meal is not easy because you can feel very lost but it is an important change.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Both fish and chicken (without the skin) make delicious meals and both will run rings around normal processed food for health so see what you can do.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Your ultimate goal is to be ready to eat the food that your diet recommends so try using one or two of the suggested meals in place of your normal meal. If you have not yet chosen, have a look at a few diet books or articles and get some idea of main courses and begin with these.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;This is also useful since it gives you an idea of the cost of your diet.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Once you have done all this and put these tips in place for a month you will be ready to start your diet and the change to diet food will not be so great. Wilson&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Green tea extract may help prevent type-2 diabetes through improved glucose tolerance&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;(NewsTarget) A new study by DSM Nutritional Products shows that epigallocatechin gallate, commonly known as EGCG, improves glucose tolerance in diabetic rodents and could be a positive addition to dietary prevention of type 2 diabetes, if the results can be applied to humans.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;"To our knowledge, we provide the first evidence that EGCG consumed in the diet exerts potent antidiabetic activity in vivo in a dose-dependent manner," wrote lead author Swen Wolfram of DSM in the Journal of Nutrition.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The study looked at 37 male mice who were severely diabetic, and divided them into four groups. The rats were fed 2.5, 5 or 10 grams of EGCG per kilogram of diet, or a placebo, for seven weeks.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;At the five-week mark, the researchers tested oral glucose tolerance and found that glucose levels reduced by 23, 35 and 48 percent in the 2.5-, 5- and 10-gram categories respectively. At six weeks into the study, the scientists tested insulin tolerance and blood samples were taken at the end of the test to analyze glucose, free fatty acids and triacylglyceride levels. All improved on a dose-dependent basis.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The researchers also studied the effects of 5 grams of EGCG per kilogram of diet over a 10-week period on mildly diabetic rats and found that glucose tolerance, blood glucose levels, and free fatty acid plasma concentrations all improved. Analysis of rat liver cells revealed that EGCG down-regulated the genes involved in gluconeogenesis and the synthesis of fatty acids, triacylglycerol and cholesterol.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;"Our data suggest that supplementation with EGCG could potentially improve glucose tolerance in humans with type-2 diabetes mellitus," concluded the researchers. "This hypothesis should now be investigated in randomized placebo-controlled trials." Wolfram said that DSM intends to begin such trials soon.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;In the United States, more than 20 million people suffer from diabetes -- about 7 percent of the population -- and about 19 million people in the European Union are so afflicted -- about 4 percent of the population. One problem. How do you get rid of the weight you gained from your pregnancy. You would have put on about twenty pounds if you were lucky. Many women put on more. The baby weighs eight to nine pounds at most. The placenta and water bag, maybe another one or two pounds. So how do you get rid of the other ten pounds?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The quick fix method of taking weight loss pills are out of the question if you are breastfeeding your baby. Whatever you eat or drink would pass into your milk, including whatever's in that weight loss pill. As for weight loss surgery, do you really want to go through that so soon after giving birth to your baby. Even then, a good doctor wouldn't agree to that surgery unless you've tried diet and exercise first.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;You've got to move. Burn up those calories. You know the drill. Burn more calories than you consume and you lose weight. Take in more calories than you burn and you gain weight. You can start with simple exercises first to get your body in shape. I learned this one from the physiotherapist at the hospital the day after I gave birth to my son.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;   1. Lie flat on your back and bend your knees. Keep your feet flat on the ground (or bed) and your knees closed.&lt;br /&gt;   2. Slowly move your bent knees to your right until your right outer thigh rests against the ground. Your upper body is still facing the ceiling.&lt;br /&gt;   3. Then roll your knees upwards and down to the left, resting your left outer thigh against the ground.&lt;br /&gt;   4. Repeat.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The slow relaxing movements ease stiff joints and really soothe the post-labour backache.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Start off by watching your diet. Cut out the ice cream and other calorie laden junk food. Switch to plain water instead of sweetened drinks. Water has zero calories while a can of coke can have as much as 155 calories.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;That knee rolling exercise wouldn't help you lose weight but walking would. Once you are well enough, take daily walks for thirty minutes each time. As you get fitter, speed up to a jog, and then a run. Running burns calories effectively. Personally, I prefer using a treadmill as I can see how many calories I burn. Besides, with a baby in the house, unless you have someone to watch over the baby while you are jogging, you'll have to keep an eye on the baby while you workout. Don't even think about leaving the baby alone at home while you are out. The worst accidents happen at home.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;With a treadmill, you can park the baby in a cot within sight and run away the calories. Another way is to get a jogging stroller. That way, you can jog outdoors and wheel baby along.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;For variety, add a great aerobics and body sculpting workout to your repertoire. Losing weight is just part of if. More importantly, you want to look great in your clothes or out of them. That means, shrinking that waist and toning the arms. You want legs that are lean. All that is achieved most quickly with a combination of light weights and aerobics. One of the best such workouts is The Firm.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Here's an example of a possible weekly exercise routine. Monday : jog with baby using the jogging stroller. I started to skip breakfast&lt;br /&gt;Most people trying to lose weight believe simply eating less and skipping meals helps shed that fat. And breakfast is a real easy meal to skip. This is one of the biggest mistakes you can make when on a weight loss diet. If you leave the house in the morning on an empty stomach you’re much more tempted to eat more at morning tea and lunch times. And, calories you eat at breakfast time are easily burnt throughout the day.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;2. I would eat one day and not the next&lt;br /&gt;I would literally eat about 2000+ calories one day, feel guilty, and end up eating about 700 calories the following day. If you eat diet foods in large portions you’re not doing yourself any favors.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;4. I thought I’d always be fat&lt;br /&gt;This is mindset that you must break if you want to lose some serious weight. Sometimes it feels like you’re doing the right things and not making any progress, this is totally natural. You need to focus on being happy and healthy and achieving your goals. Try not to get caught up in “the big picture”.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;5. I started eating salads as main meals&lt;br /&gt;Eating salad is a good way of keeping your calorie intake down right? Yes, meal of salad has much less calories that a pizza but does it have the satisfaction? When you eat you mind needs to get some satisfaction from what you have just eaten. I found that when I ate salads for meals a few hours later I was back I the cupboard looking for more food. I learnt that I was better off eating a balanced meal with slightly more calories than simply eating a salad and snacking afterwards.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;6. I started my new diets on Mondays&lt;br /&gt;When I found a new diet that I decided I was going to try I always started it on a Monday. This meant I would eat all weekend like I was never going to eat again. Doing this I was just setting myself up for failure.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;7. I was to embarrassed to go to the gym&lt;br /&gt;Taking the plunge and joining a gym was one of the hardest things I ever did. I was always worried that people in the gym would be staring at me and talking about me. I really thought I was too fat to join. My advice is to join a gym! You’ll be glad you did. I look forward to going to the gym now.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;8. I set my goals to high&lt;br /&gt;Setting long term goals is great, but these goals always seem to far off. You need to set smaller, more reachable goals that you can regularly meet to keep your motivation high. Set yourself weekly, monthly and three monthly goals. Once you meet one short term goal set a new one for next week.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;So there you have it, those are the mistakes I made. I now look at weight loss from a totally different perspective and it has paid off. As we age, &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;we all start producing less of these vital hormones. However, it doesn’t have to be this way. You can increase your body’s natural production of &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;anabolic hormones by starting a carb cycling program. The point I’m going to make in this article is that you can change what you crave &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;by changing how you think.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Every new client that comes to my office for weight-loss has a “craving problem.” But I don’t see it as a problem at all. I see it as a solution. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Cravings are over-rated. They are hodge-podge and we don’t have to be controlled by them. We don’t have to feel temped by ice cream, &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;cookies or 20-ounce prime ribs. Instead, we can be tempted by watermelon, pineapple, oranges or apples; foods like that. Think that sounds &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;crazy? Well it isn’t and you’ll see why.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;When I first sit down and talk with a client about their eating habits, I gather everything I need to know about exactly what they eat and how &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;they eat. The culprit to their weight problem always boils down to snacking, picking, eating foods that are unhealthy or just plain over-eating. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Then I’ll ask them what fruits and vegetables they like. I’m yet to come across someone who hates fruit or hates every vegetable under the sun. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Finally I’ll ask them how often they eat fruits or vegetables and it’s always a lot less often than the unhealthy stuff.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;After I’ve gathered my arsenal of information, we do our thing. I’ll have my clients lay back in my recliner and close their eyes. I’ll direct their mind &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;to a peaceful place, and within minutes they’ll be relaxed like never before. Then I start talking about their favorite fruits and vegetables. I’ll ask &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;them to imagine taking a bite of their favorite juicy, ripe fruit and to feel the juices tickling their taste buds. I’ll say to their mind, “from now on &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;anytime you have a craving for food, you will think of a juicy, ripe piece of fruit. And bingo!!! Next thing you know these are exactly the kinds of &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;foods they start desiring. Why? Because anytime you close your eyes and bring yourself to a calm, relaxed place, your subconscious mind &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;emerges, and it is this part of the mind that controls what you crave. Change your thoughts and you’ll change what you crave. Simple.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Let’s look at this from another perspective. Let’s say pineapple is your favorite fruit. Now, if you were sitting with me right now and I gave you a &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;juicy chunk of it, you would enjoy it thoroughly. And you’d want more, right? Of course. Now, let’s say I reached into my refrigerator, whipped-out &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;a piece of chocolate cake and said, “choose one.” Most likely you would opt for the pineapple because you just had a teaser-piece, which &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;would make your mind want more. The fact of the matter is this: you enjoy your favorite fruits just as much as you enjoy your favorite junk foods, &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;you just believe otherwise.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Again, cravings are over-rated. The mere mention of that devilish word always seems to conjures-up images of high calorie, high fat foods only &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;because these are the foods you are most exposed to in our media driven world. Your subconscious gets accustomed to this and just doesn’t &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;know any better. Change your minds images and you’ll change your cravings. Here’s a quick 5 minute mental exercise you can begin doing now &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;to help you start changing the way you crave food.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Step 1: Find a comfortable, quiet place where there are no distractions. Begin breathing deeply until you are quite relaxed. Next, count &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;backwards from 10-1, slowly. With each count, imagine that your mind is drifting deeper and deeper.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Step 2: After you have finished counting, imagine that you are relaxing by yourself in your favorite place. A secluded beach or a log in the woods &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;will do the trick. Imagine yourself feeling so very relaxed and peaceful.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Step 3: Next, imagine a basket full of your favorite fresh picked fruit sitting right next to you. See it clearly in your mind, the color, the feel, &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;everything about that fruit. Imagine taking a bite of that juicy fruit and enjoying it like never before.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Step 4: Repeat the following suggestion to yourself 10 times: “From now on, anytime I think of eating, I immediately feel a craving for fruit.”&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Step 5: Count from 1 to 5, slowly, and when you reach 5 open your eyes.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Thomas J. With a detox diet, it is possible to improve health, energy, digestion, mental state, your resistance to disease and even &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;experience weight loss. The modifications that you have to make in detox diet includes fasting with juice fasting and water fasting, increasing &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;the consumption of fish like salmon, restriction in calorie intake and using a herbal detox or master cleanse called the lemonade diet. Most &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;important, a detox diet calls for more of fruits and vegetables in one’s food intake, limitations in processed food and the elimination of alcohol &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;and smoking.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The main reason people go on a detox diet is because a human body ingests lots of water, food and air in a day. It is very possible that fat &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;soluble chemicals existing in them get deposited in the cells of the body. With a poor diet, the human body cannot detoxify these chemicals and &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;this leads to a further build up of toxic waste in the body which in turn leads to illnesses, hormonal imbalance, nutritional deficiencies and a &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;weak metabolism. Once you go on a detox diet, you tend to experience improved energy, have regular bowel movements, find an increase in &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;concentration and clarity in life, improvement in your digestion and clearer skin. However before you go on a detox diet, it is better that you &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;consult with your doctor to see if the detox diet is appropriate for you. Nursing women, children and pregnant women should never go on a &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;detox diet. (2) What should I eat if I smoke? (3) If I quit, what type of diet is best to prevent weight gain?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;(1) CAN A DIET COMPENSATE FOR SMOKING?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;No diet or eating-plan, no matter how nutritious, can neutralise the health damage caused by the 850+ chemicals in tobacco smoke - many of &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;which are carcinogenic. On average, if you smoke 20 cigarettes a day, you double your risk of a heart-attack and are five times more likely to &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;suffer a stroke than a non-smoker. At 40 cigarettes a day, you are five times more likely to suffer from sudden cardiac death. Smoking is also &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;the leading cause of lung cancer.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Thus before we even start to examine an appropriate type of diet for smokers, my overriding advice is: quit smoking today!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;(2) WHAT SHOULD I EAT IF I SMOKE?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;For anyone who smokes, daily diet nutrition is critical. The damage doneto the body's cardiovascular and respiratory functions requires a &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;constant need for extra nutrients. Even if you smoke 5 cigarettes a day, you have increased nutritional needs due to your increased risk of &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;hypertension, atherosclerosis, emphysema and numerous cancers. As stated, a healthy diet will not prevent these health conditions, but it may &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;delay their development.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;INCREASED NEED FOR ANTIOXIDANTS&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Tobacco smoke leads to increased levels of free radicals - cancer-causing agents - in the body and a corresponding need for protective &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;antioxidants that can neutralise them. The main antioxidant vitamins are vitamin C and vitamin E (which works best in combination with the &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;mineral selenium). Phytochemicals such as bioflavonoids and carotenoids (eg. beta-carotene) are also rich in antioxidants.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;HOW TO INCREASE YOUR ANTIOXIDANT INTAKE&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Use the following suggestions are a guide to minimum dietary requirements.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;- Eat 3-5 daily servings of deep green, dark red, orange of yellow vegetables.&lt;br /&gt;- Eat 3-5 daily servings of red, yellow, orange or green fruits.&lt;br /&gt;- Switch from coffee to tea, ideally green tea.&lt;br /&gt;- Each day, take 2 tsp of wheatgerm oil (rich in vitamin E) and 6 Brazil nuts (selenium).&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;[Note: a serving is approx 1 medium fruit, or 1/2 cup chopped]&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;SPECIAL NEED FOR INCREASED VITAMIN C&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;One cigarette is estimated to rob the body of 25mg of vitamin C. Thus all smokers have a greatly increased need for this antioxidant-rich vitamin &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;simply to maintain minimum levels. In practice, this need can only be met by taking supplements. As a general guide, I suggest you take 1 gram &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;of vitamin C supplements per day. Choose a "timed-release" brand that includes a minimum of 100mg bioflavonoids.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;BEST DIETARY SOURCES OF VITAMIN C&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Fruits, such as: blackcurrants, papaya, guava, cantaloupe, elderberries, kiwi fruit, mango, oranges, strawberries.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Fruit Juices, such as: cranberry, grapefruit, lemon, orange.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Vegetables, such as: red peppers, green peppers, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cauliflower, kale, tomatoes.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;PROTECTIVE CAROTENOIDS&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Carotenoids are pigments found in plants. All carotenoids are antioxidants, the most common example being beta-carotene. It is found in green &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;plants (eg. spinach), as well as orange and yellow plants, such as carrots, sweet potato and melons. Clinical trials indicate that when consumed &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;in foods - not supplements - betacarotene reduces certain precancerous symptoms.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;[Warning: for reasons which are still unclear, beta-carotene supplements actually increase the risk of disease (eg. lung cancer). Thus your &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;intake of beta-carotene should come exclusively from food.]&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;HOW TO INCREASE YOUR INTAKE OF CAROTENOIDS&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Use the following suggestions are a guide to minimum dietary requirements.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Eat 4 daily servings of deep green, yellow or red vegetables, including: carrots, sweetcorn, pumpkin, spinach, sweet potato.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Eat 4oz tomatoes daily, either in sauce or chopped.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Eat 3 daily servings of colored fruit, including: melon, oranges, strawberries, mango, cherries.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;PROTECTIVE BRASSICAS&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;According to research evidence, cigarette smokers who eat more brassicas have less incidence of cancers (eg. breast, colorectal, lung, &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;pancreatic, prostate and stomach). As all these cancers are initiated by free radicals, it follows that brassicas may help to prevent other &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;problems initiated by free radical damage and accelerated by smoking, such as: cataracts, emphysema, asthma and age spots.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Brassicas include: broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cabbage (all types), cauliflower, cress, horseradish, kale, kohlrabi, mustard, radish, swede, turnip, &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;watercress.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;GARLIC AND ONIONS&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Garlic is a good source of unique antioxidants and contains anti-bacterial and anti-viral properties. Its anti-tumor properties are well &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;documented. Onions, a member of the same vegetable family, have similar properties to garlic.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;MORE DIETARY TIPS FOR SMOKERS&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Reduce the total fat in your diet. At the same time, minimize your intake of saturated fat and trans-fatty acids. Eat regular servings of omega-3&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;-rich oily fish (eg. salmon, mackerel, sardines).&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Eat healthy carbohydrates. Avoid refined white flour carbs, choose only whole grains such as, oats, brown rice, wholewheat pasta. In addition, &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;choose foods rich in soluble fiber (eg. apples, oat bran).&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Eat healthy low-fat protein such as fish, lean chicken/turkey, or egg-whites. Include small amounts of lean red meat in your diet, along with &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;regular servings of soy foods (eg. soybeans) and other vegetable protein.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Reduce sodium in your daily diet. Check food labels and choose low-sodium or sodium-free foods. Also avoid adding salt when cooking or &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;eating.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;TAKE REGULAR CARDIO-AEROBIC EXERCISE&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;No cigarette smokers diet-plan is complete without regular physical exercise. Working within your fitness capacity, gradually increase the &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;intensity and duration of your workouts to about 30-45 minutes a day, on most days. For best effects on lung capacity and cardiovascular &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;function, choose aerobic exercise such as: brisk walking, jogging, jumping rope, swimming and most sports.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;(3) CAN YOU PREVENT WEIGHT GAIN AFTER YOU QUIT?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Yes, if you take proper physical exercise and eat a healthy calorie-controlled diet, you are unlikely to gain weight. However, in my experience, &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;some weight gain seems to be inevitable.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;WHAT IS THE AVERAGE WEIGHT GAIN?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Most smokers gain weight immediately after they quit. Current evidence suggests that the average weight gain for both men and women who &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;quit smoking is about 6-8 pounds. The more you smoke, the higher the risk of weight gain when you quit. This weight gain is due to the &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;decrease in metabolic rate and an increase in appetite experienced when you quit smoking. This weight increase is perfectly normal, and need &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;only be a short term event.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;SO WHAT SHOULD I EAT?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;There is no single diet which will prevent weight gain once you quit smoking. Your best option is to focus on healthy eating combined with &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;regular vigorous exercise (within your fitness capacity) and let Nature do the rest. As a general guide, follow these suggestions.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;First, cut down on caffeine. Nicotine withdrawal makes us jittery and nervous. So it's important to avoid coffee and caffeine-rich soft drinks &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;which may increase this nervous tension.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Second, increase your intake of fresh fruit and vegetables. Studies show that an increased intake of fruit and vegetables can help to minimize &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;weight gain after you quit smoking. Eat them for snacks, add them to meals, eat them as starters and/or desserts. Eat them on car journeys &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;instead of sweets or candy.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Third, eat little and often. Avoid the temptation to linger over your meals. Get into the habit of eating smaller meals at more regular intervals. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Aim to eat something, no matter how small, every 2-3 hours. This helps to maintain a regular rate of calorie-burning.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Fourth, take steps to learn more about nutrition and choose nutrient-dense foods whenever possible. (See above for information about &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;antioxidants, and healthy fats, carbs and protein.)&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;WHAT ELSE CAN I DO TO PREVENT WEIGHT GAIN?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Make physical exercise a top priority in your daily schedule. Ideally join a gym or fitness center and get into shape. Research evidence &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;demonstrates a clear link between exercise and weight control after you quit smoking. Choose both cardio-aerobic and strength-training &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;exercises, as both play an important role in raising metabolic rate.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Also, make sure you get enough sleep.
